TwendeButiama
TwendeButiama is a Mwalimu Nyerere Bicycle Tour which mobilises cyclists for Long Distance and Endurance Bicycle Tours in Tanzania. It is a combination of Cycling Enthusiastic, non-profit, volunteer-directed Cyclists for bicycling.
Our Call for Action is to cycle-for-cause to commemorate Tanzanian’s Father of the Nation, Mwl. Julius Kambarage Nyerere as an African Hero. We cycle in honoring his contribution in bringing Unity, Solidarity, Peace and National Patriotism.
TwendeButiama is a Bicycle Tour registered under the name “TwendeButiama Bicycle Club”.
The Club started its bicycle Tours back in 2018 and it was formerly registered on June 3rd, 2021 under the National Sports Council vide Certificate No. NSC 12708.
Club Headquarters are based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. TwendeButiama is a member of Cycling Association of Tanzania (CAT) who are the regulators of Cycling activities in Tanzania
How we do it
TwendeButiama Bicycle Tours
TwendeButiama is a 1500km Bi-Annual Bicycle Tour to commemorate the life legacy of Mwl Julius Kambarage Nyerere. He was born on April 13, 1922 and died on October 14, 1999.
TwendeButiama® is not a race, it is an adventure and social bike tour in April 13 and October 14 from Dar es Salaam to Butiama
It is for everyone. It is open to newbies, ladies and gentlemen, children, young and elders, professional cyclists, amateur athletes.
Cyclists can participate any stage or complete the entire tour
Cyclists cycle more than 1500km to complete the entire route, across 10 regions, and climb over 20,000 vertical feet.
Nyerere@100 (April 8-12)
This is 5 Day Ultra Endurance Bicycle Tour from April 8 to April 12.
For the 2023 season, TwendeButiama for the second time is joining the Government program on Nyerere@100 . At least 30 cyclists have registered
Nyerere Day (October 6-14)
Every 14 October is Nyerere Day in Tanzania, a day to honor the memory of the Tanzania’s first president and the number one leader in independence movement.
This Year, TwendeButiama will be celebrating its Fifth Year of honoring Nyerere’s contribution.

WE CYCLE to promote Domestic Tourism by visiting tourist attraction sites.
WE CYCLE to promote Environmental Sustainability Practices by promoting Climate Smart Actions. We are promoting Tree Planting through “Miti kwa Umri” Campaign whereby each Tanzanian, every year, should plant trees corresponding to their ages
Tunakuenzi kwa Vitendo Campaign
TwendeButiama is currently implementing a Changia Dawati-Tokomeza Ujinga as a fundraising campaign for School Desks for Primary Schools in Tanzania. This is to honor Nyerere’s education agenda for social-economic development.
He believed there is no Independence and Self Reliance without Economic Growth. Economic growth can be achieved through education (formal/informal)
Six Primary schools in four regions (by 2022) have benefited from the campaign. Our aim is to reach-out to more schools.
Environmental Sustainability
TwendeButiama promotes environment conservation through riding bicycles (Bicycles dont run on fuels) and tree planting (Miti kwa Umri). By 2022, more than 50,000 trees have been planted through this campaign
Promote Domestic Tourism
Promote Domestic Tourism by visiting different tourist attraction areas including those that have Nyerere’s footprints i.e where he was born, where he grew, lived, schooled where he worked and different places that he was involved during his life and struggle for Independence

Twende Butiama From Day 1
Cyclists from different parts of Tanzania starts the tour in Dar es salaam and passes through pwani, Morogoro and other areas. Twende Butiama is a 1500km long bicycle ride which starts in Dar es salaam to Butiama. The tour passes a spectacular terrain from the Dar es salaam coastline to the shores of Lake Victoria. Twende Butiama Bicycle Tour takes place twice a year; every April on Nyerere’s Birthday(April 7th – 11th) and every October to commemorate the death anniversary (October 3rd – 14th)

Where the Route Starts
TwendeButiama Route Map has a scenic set of courses, mostly tarmac-road that enables cyclists to enjoy the Breathtaking Natural Landscapes of Tanzania. The route map enables participants to enjoy the Tanzania’s breadth of topographical splendor that sets it apart from other destinations, such as the sheer variety of landscapes, dramatic scenes which includes bright sunshine, filtering through stormy clouds, green grassy plains-filled with bright little flowers, Acacia trees, never-ending plains with threatening clouds looming, dark blue escarpments/savannahs, towering mountains, bustling cities and so much more. This is a truly peaceful and relaxing time to enjoy while on saddle
